I don't know what everyone else thinks, but IMHO, AutoCAD would be AMAZING on OS X. The e-zine www.architosh.com has been working on an petition to get AutoCAD (arguably the best CAD program available) ported to Mac OS X. Look at the AutoCAD Petetion for Mac OS X page at and make a statement either for or against AutoCAD on the Mac. To quote one of the pages: 'Apparently Autodesk has been monitoring the Architosh site for well over a year and following our news of the Autocad for Mac OS X survey. We take this as a serious sign that the company is not only watching the Mac CAD market but taking some sort of interest in the Mac OS X platform.' This site is devoted to CAD on the Mac, therefore there will be NO AUTOCAD USERS in the forums.

Autodesk is monitoring the wrong place, perhaps it should put up it's own poll at the website. Something along the lines of 'What platform(s) would you like to see AutoCAD on?' I'm sure there will be a number of people that will vote for LINUX, but Mac OS X is based on UNIX BSD. (According to the Apple Website, the next major release will be based on UNIX BSD 4.4) Why support all the flavors of LINUX when UNIX can be supported (via supporting Mac OS X)? If I'm a lone voice in the crowd, let me get some attention for something that many (including myself) are desiring. Since AutoCAD is currently unavailable for the Mac OS, I'm looking for another CAD program. I know that there are other people in my situation, let your local Autodesk representative (your dealer) know about it.

True, where I used to work several people did that. We didn't do any 3D work but it worked fine for 2D as long as you have plenty of RAM. Oct 31, 2001 - The fruits of that software CAD product are now in two places (if not more. Mac3D CAD: MCnurbs Creator ready for Mac OS X - [Nov 16] New! AutoCAD LT for Mac - Create Technical drawings with the easy to use essential drafting tools in AutoCAD LT software with features like multi.

We choose AutoCAD because of it's features, why can't we keep our CAD of choice, and change to the platform that we choose as well? Please, Please, Please.

If you or anyone else that you know has any interest in this happening, let your dealer know. Flood Autodesk's HQ with letters (real paper mail). Let everyone know. I watched a round table discussion with AutoDesk CEO Carol Bartz, and she stated the benefits of sup porting a single platform.

I'm not trying to say that there is no benefit to such a business strategy, but inprovement thru diversity should be treated as an axiom. Pass this around. In Christ Jesus. It looks promising, However I don't like the look of the interface. Besides, LinuxCAD will run on SuSE (perhaps YellowHat as well?) on PPC, and is not OS X native. Great looking product with very tight integration with the DWG file type upon first look. Not trying to start a flame war but please cite your examples and data proving that OSX is better and more stable than say Win2k Pro. I am glad the Mac users have FINALLY gotten a good OS, I do not see how they got by on previous offerings (OS 8 and 9). I have a Mac co-worker and we have ran several test comparing his dual G4 (500 MHz) to my P3-933 and I have won in every test. He is not running OSX yet due to the fact that his main app. (Form-Z) is not OSX ready. But in what I have seen in the last year working with him is that I cannot see the reason to spend double for a computer (and his was double the price of mine) that does not offer any performance advantage (and every piece of software he runs also has a Win version).

Not saying that there is anything wrong with using a Mac but I canot see any advantage except for sheer personal choice. And I find ease of use subjective so let's not go that route. What you may find easy other people may find not easy and vice-versa. Ease of use is not a tangible item.

Like I said not trying to start a flame war but what have you come across that swings you in this direction. I for one would not ever consider trying to do work on a Win95/98/Me based system, what a joke. No stability what so ever.

But Win2k Pro is the most stable OS I have ever seen. In the year plus that I have been using it I have only locked it up 5 times. Each time I had multiple sessions of AutoCAD open and other programs as well. I have not used XP and I cannot comment on it but I would hope that it is just as stable. I'd love to see but will be extremely surprised if I ever do. Best and/or most stable platform is not a huge concern to most companieswhat they want is the most profitable platform, and rightfully so. That said, I would be the first to switch over if it ever came out, I already have OS X up and ready to go, gotta love those UNIX goodies. matthew g. Craig A well put and thoughtful request, unfortunately I think you are whistling in the dark!

I agree with everything you have said and I hope Autodesk will listen but it ain't gonna happen! New PC sales (and Autodesk is a PC program) are 92% WINDOZE operating system, that is one hell of a powerful argument against supporting any other platform! Bill has a strangle hold on the PC market and even with the Government trying to shake him loose he just isn't letting up. He has a virtual monopoly and until those numbers change there is no incentive for software manufacturers to port their software to other platforms. Other companies do port their software but Acad is a very large and complicated system.

In the past they supported Mac, Unix, PC and NEXT, but cutbacks and a refocus elliminated all versions except WinDoze after R12, the numbers just didn't justify the expense. Numbers since then have only strengthened this comittement to this OS, MAC sales continue to slide down, slowly but surely and Linux although a great OS can't seem to make the jump to main stream users. Techno geeks will keep installations strong and open source will supply some apps. But the money is on the Windoze PC and there is no sign of that changing anytime soon!

I wish you luck and will add my rather weak and unappreciated voice to this call but a cry in the wilderness!
